Colloidal 2D Semiconductor Nanomaterials: A Chemical Approach to Innovative Photonics and New (Room-Temperature) Single Photon Emitters?

Colloidal two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor nanomaterials, so-called nanosheets and nanoplatelets, are only a few atomic layers thick and exhibit highly promising optoelectronic properties that are chemically tunable between UV-Vis and technologically relevant infrared wavelengths. [1-5] The strong quantum confinement in the materials’ thickness dimension leads to high exciton binding energies and narrow absorption and emission features in the structures. Their robust ensemble emission properties make colloidal 2D semiconductors perfect candidates for an integration into (optical) fibers and controlled light-redirection or lasing. On the other hand, 2D semiconductors are highly promising materials for single photon emission, which plays a key role in highly topical photonic quantum technologies. [6]
I will present recent results on our chemistry-based approach toward innovative photonics and photonic quantum technologies covering telecommunication and optical wavelengths by tailoring the optoelectronic properties of 2D semiconductors.
