High-resolution two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) of polycyclic aromatic molecules in different environments
Molecular dynamics depends strongly on the interaction with the local environment. Resolving fast dynamics with high energy resolution requires advanced measurement methods, among which coherent multidimensional spectroscopy is a promising candidate. Combining two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) with cluster isolation techniques has proven effective for studying the fast dynamics of cold dopant-cluster complexes. Studying these simplified model systems complements a fundamental understanding of intra- and intermolecular processes.
A series of measurements was conducted on the vibrational decoherence process of PTCDA (3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride) molecules. By comparing the measured decoherence and population decay rates, we extracted the pure dephasing rates, which reflect environmental fluctuations. These measurements also reveal distinct features across different environments. Our results suggest that PTCDA molecules adopt a non-planar geometry when attached to argon clusters due to the surface morphology of the clusters. When embedded in helium nanodroplets, PTCDA complexes (such as dimers and trimers with background gas molecules) appear to form unusual binding configurations.
