LiMatI for pupils
Every year on the first Tuesday in March, the Institute of Physics opens its lecture halls, laboratories and workshops to interested pupils in grades 9-12 (registration required).
In addition to the lighthouse competition, in which the smartest physics minds in our country compete for the lighthouse cup, there is an extensive all-round program with experimentarium, laboratory and practical tours, lectures and our great show lecture. We are happy to provide insights into our research areas and everyday life at our institute. The groups of pupils are guided through all areas by students and researchers and have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in a good exchange.

Energy in transition - Rostock Physics Day 2024 at the University of Rostock
Over 300 pupils in grades nine to twelve from 22 schools in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern took part in the 21st Physics Day at the Institute of Physics on March 5, 2024.
The Physics Day took place at the Institute of Physics on the Südstadtcampus and was held under the motto "Energy in Transition". Experts from various departments presented innovative and sustainable approaches to energy generation, storage and use together with students.
In lectures, laboratory tours and an experimentarium, students and scientists discussed topics such as the best source of energy, future roof technologies and the potential of nuclear fusion. The show lecture with spectacular experiments provided entertainment and instructive insights.
A highlight was the lighthouse competition, in which the best schools and the brightest physics students in the country competed for the lighthouse trophy by solving experimental physics problems. A jury finally selected the winning school for Physics Day 2024, with the coveted Lighthouse Cup going to the CJD Christophorus School in Rostock.

π-ratery and the paths of light - Rostock Physics Day 2023 at the University of Rostock
For the 20th time, the Institute of Physics opened its doors on March 7, 2023 to welcome students in grades nine to twelve from all over the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The theme of this year's Physics Day was "Way of Light", with light taking center stage.
Physics Day 2023 took place as a hybrid format at the Institute of Physics in person on the Südstadtcampus and online at www.physiktag-rostock.de. Researchers and students turned on the lights and shed light on the fascinating physics of light: How do I measure with light? How invisible is invisible? How do you trap a beam of light? How does light know where to go? - were questions to which there were many exciting answers. Physicists addressed these questions together with more than 300 pupils in lectures, laboratory tours and a large experimentarium. The show lecture was once again a special highlight. As usual, it was entertaining with many spectacular and instructive experiments.
The highlight was the lighthouse competition, in which the best schools determined in the preliminary round competed for the lighthouse trophy and the smartest physics minds in the country. Here, the pupils worked on experimental physics questions. A jury determined the winning school for Physics Day 2023.

The 19th Physics Day took place on March 1, 2022 as an online event due to the pandemic-related restrictions.
We invited all physics-loving students in grades 9-12 to participate in our 19th Physics Day online on March 1, 2022. The motto of the year was "THE ELEQUANT IN SPACE"!
Time demands new thinking and is full of fascinating technology. Quantum physics leads us into new ways of thinking and is already the basis of many technological solutions that surround us and that we use every day. In 2022, we wanted to take up this highly complex topic and develop ways of communicating quantum physics together with students and researchers. In addition to our lighthouse competition, in which the best physics minds were allowed to compete, the students were offered an all-round program with live-streamed lectures, a large online experimentarium, videos of laboratory and internship tours and, finally, our live-streamed show lecture. We once again set up our online teachers' café for good discussions.
The 18th Physics Day took place on March 2, 2021 as an online event due to the pandemic-related restrictions.
In addition to the traditional physics tournament, in which this time it was an exciting battle of clever minds in digital rooms for the "Rostock Lighthouse" challenge cup, there was an extensive all-round program. Laboratory, workshop and internship tours in the form of videos, synchronous lectures from the lecture hall, a student advisory service in the digital room, a large experimentarium in the form of interactive offers and, of course, our great show lecture, which concluded the Physics Day synchronously from the main lecture hall.
