100 years of quantum science - a century of groundbreaking innovations that have turned our understanding of the world upside down.
As part of the “Quantum Year 2025”, the LiMatI Collaborative Research Centre is presenting an extraordinary science communication program that not only celebrates the groundbreaking discoveries of quantum physics, but also takes up the visions and debates of the 1927 Solvay Conference - a historic turning point at which modern quantum mechanics began.
10.-14.02.2025 Symposium
Scientists and artists work together to shed light on different disciplines in our society.
As part of this symposium, four artists will have the opportunity to work on the topic of “Quantum” in the research areas and laboratories of the university as well as in studios and spaces of the Kunst.Schule.Rostock and the Kunstverein zu Rostock from February 10-14, 2025. In order to initiate the exchange between scientists and artists, there will be various formats for encounters.
We cordially invite you to the following public events

04.03.2025 Physics day for pupils
The elequant in space 2.0 - or why do we need quantum?
The upcoming Physics Day will take place on March 4, 2025 at the Institute of Physics at the University of Rostock. 23 schools from all over the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with more than 300 students will participate in this year's Physics Day.
For the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, everything at our institute will revolve around the topic of quantum physics throughout the year. The starting point is our Physics Day. In addition to the lighthouse competition, which as usual will be about the lighthouse cup and the smartest physics minds in our country, there will be an extensive all-round program with an experimentarium, laboratory and practical tours, lectures and our great show lecture. Scientists will provide insights into their current research areas and everyday life as a student at our institute. The groups of pupils are guided through all areas by students and scientists and have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in a good exchange.
The Experimentarium will also be open to the public on March 4 from 12:00-16:00. You are cordially invited to visit us on the timeline of quantum physics. (Institute of Physics, Albert-Einstein-Straße 23, Research Building, ground floor and 1st floor)
14.04.2025 World Quantum Day 2025
Quantum (Physics | Art)
As part of International Quantum Day 2025, several artistic-scientific contributions will take place that shed light on the fascinating interfaces between art and quantum physics.
Since 2020, four artists have been working intensively with institutes at the University of Rostock on the phenomena of quantum physics. This process can be experienced in artistic positions in the fields of photography, drawing, installation, conceptual art and performance in collaboration with the University of Music and Drama.
The patron of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger, will open the exhibition.

15.05.2025 Long Night of the Sciences
As part of Quantum Year 2025, we are setting points of light during the Long Night of Science to bring the fascinating secrets of quantum physics to life and share exciting discoveries.

16.05.2025 International Day of Light
Filmscreening "Tracing Light - The Magic of Light"
Light is the basis of life, visible only through the encounter with matter, the language of the universe.
“Everyone thinks they know what light is,” says quantum physicist Daniele Faccio. “But then you dig a little deeper and realize that you have no idea.”
After the film, we invite you to a public discussion with scientists and artists.
